How Many Times Do Felicity and Noel Get Back Together

Felicity (TV Series 1998–2002) Poster

6 /10

JJ's first hit

Felicity Porter (Keri Russell) never had the courage to talk to high school crush Ben Covington (Scott Speedman). On a whim, shy Felicity follows Ben to college. Once there, Noel Crane (Scott Foley) quickly falls head over heels for her and a love triangle ensues.

Felicity has the distinction of being the first JJ Abrams' first hit. This started off great as a young hip emo college soap. In great TV lore, Keri Russell cut her hair before the 2nd season, and destroyed the series. Keri never stopped being great and the love triangle maintained its heat. The coming-of-age story is nicely told. It did last for four seasons, but that Samson allegory still held some truth.

Keri Russell as Felicity in college.

Warning: Spoilers

Felicity is one of the TV series that my wife and I both enjoyed. She liked the stories, I enjoyed watching the pretty college girls. Keri Russell, who got her start as a member of the Mickey Mouse gang, plays the title character, Felicity Porter. The series was loosely based on Felicity's experiences and puppy loves while in college and living in a dormitory. While many of the other cast members were older, even in their 30s, Russell really was college age during the run of the series. Starting with long, curly hair which was a signature look of sorts, she created quite a stir when she showed up with very short hair for one new season. Before this TV series, she was in a charming little movie called 'Eight Days A Week.'

Greg Grunberg who played Sean Blumberg was my favorite non-female cast member. Although he was one of the older ones, already in his 30s, I always enjoyed his natural, relaxed acting style. Since the series was canceled, I have seen Grunberg in a number of other shows. Scott Speedman and Scott Foley played two of Felicity's boyfriends, at different times. I never really enjoyed their performances. Their characters never seemed real.

nice

a teen series must be only nice. and Felicity has that virtue. a girl, few boys, common situations, large territories of love, small crisis, not new dialog'subjects, problems, friendship, expectations, hopes. so, nothing original. but that is its purpose. to present a story without high ambitions, to be escape for teenagers and mirror for expectations. only a show, it has humor and few charming moments. and nothing else. a kind of oasis , unrealistic but seductive, few not bad actors and the universe of Felicity. a series who reminds many others. and that could be another virtue. because it is nice. and for the crumbs from a fascinating age in not worst light.

Good chick flick series, ruined by the main couple.

Warning: Spoilers

The direction the show took after a while, was wrong. Like the network wanted this atypical teen drama to fit the mold. Ben and Felicity was the goal, all along. But it actually wasn't, only writers were too fixated on that idea, they forced the issue. Ad nauseam. Almost making us regret the heroine followed her heart, when so many other opportunities were offered to her. It's the first time I was convinced that, without a doubt, she should've stayed single. For a while at least. Which she apparently does before that « fever dream ». And the confusing part that ensues her waking up. That completely destroyed efforts made to redeem an otherwise tedious final season, with crazy illogicalities. Personally, I think the cast had a lot to do with the appeal of that show. Like a group of friends who've decided to write, star and direct their own first real television series. I loved the humor too. Season 1 is the show at its best. It's the most wholesome season of the whole series. With themes you're going to find throughout the whole run. Season 2 had the best premiere and drama, if you like that depressing tone. As well as one of my favorite episodes and cast. Season 3 is the shortest and most forgettable one, with a revamp that is a bit too soap opera-ish for a show like this. And irritating characters, old AND new. When season 4 is a complete mess, where the series don't know what it's about anymore (run of the mill social issues addressed, very randomly. Including Elena's « confession », that was utterly ridiculous and insulting to the show's spirit) or where it's leading towards (those added episodes were good, but what were these characters doing at Noel's wedding?). Despite being the weakest, and preachy sometimes, it has some interesting episodes. Like The declaration, Fire, Paper chase or The Graduate, and the extended part after that. It's no secret this show didn't last long, mainly because of poor writing choices and inability to go outside its comfort zone. Or not following orders?... I still enjoy it once in a while, mostly season 1 and parts of season 2. Only it's clear nearly half of it is worth all the praises. Speaking of which, I'm not ok with the way the soundtrack was handled. It's different everywhere! The TV version, the DVD sets, and now the streaming services. Couldn't the music supervisor do a better job securing his work?

Started off right, ended wrong

Warning: Spoilers

The freshman season of this college show (pun intended, hehe) was razor sharp before segueing into some decent middle years before falling off the shelf and petering to it's finish. It all begins when 18-year-old Felicity (the beautiful Russell) decides to follow her high school crush to college in New York. The show picked up a lot of flack, as the press labeled Felicity a "stalker", which I felt was ridiculous. She wasn't obsessed with this guy, wasn't peering in his windows, etc. Anywho, while trying to pursue him, she finds herself attracted to the R.A. (resident advisor) who helms the dorms. A wonderful pulling match begins as she tries to decide with whom her emotions lie. This goes on the entire year in some terrificly written episodes that keep you tuning in. The second season premiere was one of the more highly anticipated ones in tv that year, revealing Felicity's choice of guy. Unfortunately, after it's reached there's a sense of "where do we go now with the story" which started to drag the show down. Not to mention the much talked about hacking off of Russell's hair which proved disaterous. The second year managed some good drama, as they drifted from the Felicity/Ben/Noel deal and focused on some of the other characters. The finale was a tremendous letdown from the first year as they have she and Ben watching a movie on a roof to end things. Blah. Plus a big smack to the head of the WB for their frustratingly idiotic scheduling of the show, airing it 12 weeks in a row then yanking it for four months before bringing it back! The ad naseum stage was reached for the final two years as Felicity went back and forth between the two guys until it got annoying. I stayed because of the terrific actors who I came to really like. Russell was a perfect choice for the title character, a gorgeous and sweet girl next door, even if she did lack the body for it. Speedman, a strong, young actor, delivered nicely with his even-natured Ben, though prone to his outbursts. Foley had a nice-guy goofiness about him, sometimes busting me up with a facial reaction or oddball line of dialogue. You had Johnson who hung around only for a couple years as Julie, who I guess I was indifferent about. Nothing ever really stood out about her. Supporting people were the annoying Foreman as Megan, a goth-bitch who you wanted to sock most of the time. Grunberg generated some laughs as the hapless Sean, whose collection of ideas to make money always seemed to bomb out. Easy laughs came from Gomez as Javier, a gay Latino who ran the coffee house where Russell and Speedman worked. There were an assortment of others as well, too many to get into. But Elena was ok, Richard a geeky dumbass, and Fazon the by the book virgin. Everything was wrapped up after four seasons with a truly unique, if misguided attempt at originality, storyline involving Felicity going back in time to see "what if?". It turns out to be yet another plot letdown as she sees everything would've worked out the same anyway. They dig up Sarah McClachlan's "I Will Remember You" as we watch the cast smile in slow motion one last time. So, though not an amazing show, the characters will remain some of my favorites for years to come.

An Amazing First Season, But Horrible Consequent Seasons.

Felicity was an amazing show in its first season. The show clearly sets up Team Noel and Team Ben. Felicity, a naive girl exposed to the big city for the first time, is trying to navigate her way through college and her crush on Ben. Keri Russell does her job brilliantly and she makes Felicity likable.

That being said, all of the characters including Felicity, all do atrocious acts. All of them are explored in the first season and it is done in a very realistic and amazing way. Scott Foley and Scott Speedman are amazing as Noel and Ben.

Now, I do not want to get into it, but I am SOOOOOOOO Team NOEL!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATED Ben Covington from the first moment he was on screen. I will let you make your own opinion or if you have already seen the show agree or disagree with me. Ben Covington never did anything horrible, but Noel is so much better and far kinder that you have to support him.

My reason for not watching subsequent seasons is related to Noel. I watched the first few of Season 2, but found that I could not because of events regarding the Season 1 finale.

I do not know if I suggest to watch the show in its entirety, but Season 1 is an absolute masterpiece and definitely deserves to be watched. Thanks for reading the review. Tell me if you agree or disagree with my opinion please.

My heart

This show is just amazing and holds a special place in my heart. For the most part, it ages really well. Very relatable!

In touch

I think this show is great, because you can identify with the different characters and it's more realistic than some of the other shows that are on now. It's like they think all college/university students are Beverley Hills 90210 but in Felicity they are more just like any other people, which makes it more interesting. I thought at first it was silly that Felicity followed Ben to New York just because of a crush, but afterwards I thought it was sweet. I'm a big fan of that couple, also I think Elena, Julie, Noel, Sean and Meghan are great characters with alot of individuality.

Disney kids gone wild (No Spoilers)

So what happens when a Disney kid goes independent? There are booming successes (hello, Timberlake/Hathaway), crashing meltdowns (hello Lohan, Spears and any number of people crushed by the weight of the rep) and then... Felicity. (BLAH!)

Felicity runs all over the map, denigrating the reputation of the NYU campus in a way that only the Olsen Twins have dared. It's possibly one of the worst shows ever -- reminiscent of an overdone sequel from the get go. The first few episodes of Season 1 were very "Disney Kid Goes to College" before the entire series transforms into a diluted version of Friends for a group of young people who are (arguably) way too young to handle these issues.

Maybe we were all Dawson Creeked out and this show was too little, too late. Like the tootsie-pop commercial says, "The world will never know" exactly what went wrong here. My guess is a weak script, mediocre direction and a *lot* of really weak acting from the entire cast. The doe-eyed thing can only carry an actor so far. Haven't really seen anything impressive from the main cast since this show either...

Shallow.

That's not to say that it wasn't fun it's first season, but the writing got worse and worse and I stopped watching. It was like watching some man's fantasy about what it would be like to be a young woman, I couldn't relate. And when they consumated the romance, it pretty much all fell apart. Don't people who make these shows know (see "Cheers") that the chemistry BEFORE they 'do it' is what makes us watch? 'Taking it to that next level' is an excuse for lazy writing. The lead girl was very good in this show though.

One of the better ones

This show, though hard to surpass it's first season, stays strong and is one of the better shows on TV. Very well written and a great cast. The characters of Javier and her roomate steal all the scenes when on screen. The show is very frank. My one beeft is the constant "Ben and Felicity" romance. Enough already. She should have picked Noel. Time to give other characters more storylines and make it more of an ensemble.

It's losing edge

Why did those writers have to mess everything up? Why did they have to make the fans change the channel? Why did Ben and Felicity have to hook up? Not too many people thought it was a good idea and now we all know why. They have ZERO chemistry and are just plain stupid as a couple. Plus, Felicity devotes all her time now to getting more and more sex by going through boyfriends on her way back to Ben. You don't see Julie much anymore, and when you do, she has this pouty-hurty-feelsorryforme-Julie look. Get over the rape already! And Elena? It's a shame that she didn't know any virgins or anyone who planned to wait for their wedding for sex. That's just sad. Now, everyone knows that Felicity and Noel belong together. Why the writers don't understand that, we'll never know, but they don't, and now the ratings are dropping. This show has lost its edge.

One Of The Most Beautiful And Under-Rated Gems Of Television

Simply put, this is one of the best TV shows in recent memory. Ever since its debut "Felicity" has had everything going for it. Perfect characters, lead by the amazing Keri Russell & supported by a string of excellence (Amanda Foreman as Megan is hilarious), and a beautiful coherent story of the challenges and choices of youth. Critics have never seized to rave of "Felicity" either. Unfortunately, it was never truly discovered by the public. With a continuous rise and fall from fame like a rollercoaster. Finally confirmed its non-staying power when the WB decided upon a brave and somewhat stupid move- the notorious cutting of Felicity's hair. A stupid reason for the public to stop watching, but they did (not even paying attention to the symbolism it was meant for). However it almost made it back, untill the WB chased its hazy followers away by re-placing it in a competitive Sunday time slot. It remained on the air after being switched and salvaged by the wind of being behind "Dawsons Creek" (a much lesser show, leaving to wonder why the public picks such slop to watch like "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and the alway over-rated "Ally McBeal", pushing them into fame). A campaign held "Felicity" up for a yet another season. But despite of a romantic and ever-surprising story its viewers remained just above 3 million (seems like allot but is really not). Not helped by the exit of creator JJ Abrams (he went on to create and uplift his career with "Alias", with another new praised lead actress, leaving Keri and "Felicity" in the dust, still remaining better, but go figure) so the WB saw $$$ signs going out the window and decided to hack it from letting "Felicity" go over her 4 year College run. But The WB can't be downed so much, it was the sole reason "Felicity" has thankfully stayed on despite lack-luster ratings. They too, as few of us viewers had the honor to see its potential. But I can't help but wish it wouldn't go anywhere. If any show has ever had true HEART its "Felicity". Its truly a diamond in the rough. An A+ and 10 all the way, and this coming from a true critic as well.

started good and end horrible

Felicity was a show about life in University. The main character was a beautiful girl who have too choice in the boy of her dreams and her soul mate. The first year was great because explain . all the university student problem, and young adult troubles (like lost the virginity, violation, obsession, relationship, ambition and frustration). the following start excellent, reinventing the show (like the "Twilightzone") and with more actually controversial topics (not Russell hair cut)like the gratuity use of pill, it was also much more about Felicity than his friend and life in collage but end bad with a too nice reunion of Felicity and Ben. The third one was the shorter, it was good but not long enough in that season Felicity seems very tired. However the other characters were more interesting (Elena Virgin boyfriend, the relationship of Maghan and Sean, The English girl and his violent boyfriend, the depression and goodbye of Julie, Noel's failure marriage). The last season started excellent with the leading affair with his friend. Most of the audience I think they wan to see Noel with Felicity, but the producer decide to finish with Ben. The only good topic of the first part was Noel depression. After Ben unfaithful, she back to the past to rescue her first love Noel. That was a funny idea but end horrible. She return to the present with Ben. Not only who choice one guy, also Elena who died in a car accident was alive with his fiancée (totally incoherent). The first season end good because the audience didn't know her choice. In the end she not only return to Ben, also she decided to stay the rest of her life with him. Most of the people wants to see in the end to see Felicity with Noel. I think that the propionate ending was a much more open mind final, where she end alone or with a third guy, because it's difficult to marry and have a nice life with your university boy/girlfriend. Maybe a good idea was when she choose Ben, then Noel left her fiancée in the church and all the story begins again. Not only end worse the whole chapter was a mess, there is not a dramatically scene between Elena (that supposed to be dead in the future) with Felicity, and the Sean Maeganhan relation end in chaos. In others time creative screenwriting's, destroy complete the end of the series with this horrible ending. That's a pity

I hope that there is an alternative

Bring back Todd Mulcahey!

I love Felicity. It's hard to say what is my most favorite thing about this show...other than Scott Foley's lips...um...anyway... cough what was I saying? Oh yes, I loved the first season. My favorite episodes had to be the stalker shows. Todd Mulcahey was a great character! Bring him BACK! And the minor characters are also great: the crazy roomie Meghan, Sean! Sean's the best. I love that they are willing to have people on here that are not TV-perfect. Sean is just like any other regular guy. His broken second date ep was heartbreaking. I love him. But back to the main show...aside from the stalker eps, I liked every ep that JJ Abrams wrote. I felt let down that they made such a big deal of Felicity's virginity, and then when she lost it, it was hardly even dealt with (from that aspect). Elena is a great character, and a great friend. Julie, to be honest, bugs the crap out of me. More Scott Foley, most of all. More Macintosh stuff. And hey guys, they could use another program besides Photoshop! Not everything is done in Photoshop! And if the guy is a font designer, he'd be working in Illustrator too (at least), not in Photoshop. I think someone should get an iBook this season! ;-That's all.

Felicity, searching for an identity in searching for love

This is one of those rare series that you don't ever want to come to an end. A beautiful love story centering around identity solidification of youth.

College students find friendship in forming an in-group to help buffer the stresses of college and of transformation into adulthood. Their problems in relating, as they discover their selves through others, are well portrayed.

Felicity is the central figure. Very smart but sometimes (like any young adult) stupid, Felicity loves two young men. Is this a recipe for trouble? You bet, and this is very well exploited in this series.

The excellent casting, acting, and production helps make this series a real winner. Two fantasy segments are presented with great creativity. One is based on a episode like those you might see on "The Twilight Zone", and depicts the struggles the students cope with. Another segment toward the end allows Felicity to go back in time and take a different direction at a major crossroads earlier in her life, and this entails unforeseen changes in the lives of those around her.

All in love this is a superb series, but you need to watch the first half of the episodes to really come to appreciate Felicity.

One perfect mix of drama and comedy.

Felicity is Ally McBeal mixed with My So-Called Life. People should tend to think of it as a stupid copy.

However Felicity surprised me. It's extremely good, even though I never expected it, while I was believing that MSCL, Party of Five and Dawson's Creek were the only teen shows that could stay on television. There's always room for one more. I witnessed some extremely dramatic and tragic scenes such as Felicity and Ben being robbbed at their own apartment or Felicity's shame as her diary is heard throughout the big party. Anyway, there were also extremely funny moments, which I never saw in teen shows, like the episode about the final exams's eve in which Noel gets really crazy when he consumes that weird drink and yells to Felicity at the study room, while those captions made for the silent conversations are displayed on the bottom of the screen.

It's a well done show. Not as funny as Ally McBeal or as dramatic as MSCL, but a good show nonetheless. The theme song is incredible. There could've been more scenes outside NYU, showing more places around New York itself. I don't believe Felicity stays secluded in that university never going anywhere else. Then again, like all teen shows, it's probably a low-budget show.

Watch Felicity at least once, even if you hate it. It's worth the effort.

Too Sappy and melodramatic

I use to like Felicity but now I see that hype that this show got was not well deserved. Yes the acting is good, but this show doesn't break any ground and the situations these characters get into have been done before. Felicity, the character, is way too melodramatic. I feel like she should be on All my children or something.

Keri Russell is good and yes, I'm glad she won a Golden Globe, but she is not the best actor on the show. Amy Jo Johnson deserves a lot of credit. she is the only reason that i will continue to watch next season. I know she kinda made herself seem stupid on Power Rangers but I'm glad she got this role because she is a terrific actress. so if Amy Jo Johnson stays on, I'll keep watching, if not I'll kiss Felicity goodbye

The worst television show that I have ever had the misfortune of seeing!

OK, first things first, lets make one thing clear - it's not like I willingly watched this show, my friend begged me to watch it with her because she was a big fan and she claimed that she could make me a fan as well. Nothing could be further from the truth. I don't even know where to begin - Casting the Pink Power ranger in a serious role? What a joke! Keri Russell is an absolutely excruciating actor, and she just mumbles her lines with no emotion or conviction. The story lines are horrendous - they just grabbed every possible college cliché they could, from living away from home, to rape, to cheating and so forth and incorporated them in this garbage that pretends to be a TV show! Steer clear!

a quality show whose time is not up yet, low ratings or not

Unlike DAWSON'S CREEK, the WB's other big show aimed at older teens and young adults, FELICITY is fresh and feels real. The characters are well-drawn, the plot lines are interesting but also make sense and all in all you care, each week, about what happens to these people. It is a shame that such quality entertainment should leave the tube, and I appeal to WB for reconsidering and sticking with it for another season for the sake of keeping a good show on TV, despite the ratings slump (hey, Keri Russel can grow back her hair, and then maybe ratings will surge again). Its time just isn't up yet.

A Youthful Show Worth Watching

While the youth of today are a primary demographic focus, often the shows geared towards them aren't as well-written as they could be. This is not the case with Felicity. This show continues to surprise me, and Keri Russell is a wonderful pick for the title character. She's perfectly subtle. The rest of the cast is noteworthy as well.

Wooden Clowns!

I watch this show just for one purpose only. I watch it to understand why a human being on earth would be interested to watch a moronic story about a wooden stiff dull imbecile girl like Felicity. The character is not even capable of being happy, stay aside making other people happy! And Keri Russel's acting really really sucks. She cannot even move her neck! All she can do is to press her lips and lower her eyelids every now and then, that's it, that's what she calls 'acting'!!! And doesn't she look old enough to be her own mother. No wonder she is not welcome on big screen in Hollywood. Just looking at her gives me a terrible headache.

All the other leads are bunch of clowns, specially Scott Speedman. I am quite convinced by now that only morons love to know about the moronic life of Felicity.

Went from Soapy fun to just plain soapy!

I was an avid fan of this show its first season. I suppose it had something to do with the fact that I was a senior and was on my way to college myself. Anyway, I knew that it was soapy and the whole premise was decidedly laughable, but some parts rang true like how even when we have someone who really likes us we have to go for the unattainable. Still, the show went downhill the second season by not only moving to Sundays, but by having uber-soapy scripts. The third season had momentum, but that was ruined by the return of the ill-conceived "Jack and Jill" and ended with a kind of thud. Undoubtedly, this show will return for many more seasons and will get worse and worse, but it was good guilty pleasure fun while it lasted.
